Chesterfield Inlet
Population: 400
Chesterfield Inlet is located on the northwest coast of Hudson Bay, just north of Rankin Inlet. Its traditional name is Igluigaarjuk, which translates to “place with a few Thule houses”. The Thule were ancient predecessors to the Inuit. In fact, Chesterfield Inlet is the oldest community in the Arctic, dating back to 1910. However, it is believed that over 700 people resided here before contact with European culture. Visitors will find archaeological sites nearby, where ancient Thule tent rings and animal traps still stand. Today, Inuit continue travel to this area each year to hunt and fish.
The Chesterfield Inlet Historic Trail outlines the rich history of the area, and will take you past the oldest buildings in town. Other tourist pursuits include excellent fishing, hiking, whale watching and caribou sport hunting. It is also a good location for bird watching, as three nearby islands are the nesting areas for waterfowl.
